Why EPS is the Future for Surfboards

My name is Daron Story. I have been surfing Ventura and L.A. County beaches for 20 years. I am very proud to be a part of the White Hot Foam family, because I believe in the future of EPS technology and its benefits to the surfing community and our environment.

Here I am with a White Hot Foam blank and my new board, a 6’2” Proctor “Groveler” made from one of our blanks. The board rides like a dream. It’s light, responsive, and paddles great!

Due to its increased bouyancy, I had the rails done 3/16” thinner than usual, giving me more control in the pocket. I will never go back to PU!

BTW, those huge blocks of EPS I 'm standing in front of are raw material for more great boards.

Like everyone else, I started on boards made from polyurethane -- there was little choice.

Now there's something better -- better to ride, better to work with, and better for our planet.

EPS is Greener

EPS foam is not only recyclable, but it is safe to work with. No VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are released during shaping/glassing process.

White Hot Foam recycles 100% of its scrap material. We grind up our leftovers for use as packaging material and filler for bean bag chairs.

We believe that an industry based on the movements and changes of Mother Nature should do its part in taking care of her.

Better Boards, Better Ride, Better Value

Surfboards made from EPS foam and epoxy resin are about 30% lighter and 4-5 times stronger than traditional polyurethane surfboards. A skillfully constructed EPS board will have the perfect balance of weight to bouyancy, while still maintaining the natural “flex”  of a polyurethane board.

Because surfboards and the materials used to make them are becoming more and more expensive, surfers and shapers are naturally expecting more value for their dollar. Shapers want materials of the highest quality, so that their customers will return to them for all their future surfboards. Surfers want boards that surf good, last long, and don’t cost an arm and a leg.

With the current capabilities of digital mapping and machine shaping, the mystery of the "magic" board have now been dissolved. With respect to the art of creating the “magic” board, most shapers can now re-create any board with ease.

The true magic now is being able to consistently create and modify the perfect board for each individual surfer, and the perfect “model” surfboard for retail sales. EPS foam is not only perfect for the new tools and technology of the industry, but will also establish a new standard of quality and value.
